Pro Bono Program

A free nexus letter for a veteran who can't afford one.

One in ten letters we deliver is pro bono

For every ten nexus letters delivered to paying clients, one is written at no charge for a qualifying US veteran in financial need. Same physician review. Same standard. Same outcome for your claim.

Why this exists

I'm a Navy veteran and a board-certified family medicine physician. I've been through the VA claims process myself, and I've watched friends from service who couldn't afford a qualified medical opinion go without one, or pay $1,000+ for template letters that didn't stand up at the VA.

Flat Rate Nexus was built to offer a fair-priced alternative at $400 flat. The Pro Bono Program is the piece of that mission that says: if you're a veteran who genuinely cannot afford even our flat rate, there's still a path. One in ten letters gets written for free.

How it works

Who qualifies

To be eligible, an applicant must meet all of the following:

Eligibility is based on self-certified financial hardship. No income documentation, tax returns, or pay stubs are required. We trust applicants to apply honestly. Misrepresentation may result in disqualification from future program rounds.

What to expect if you are awarded

If your application is selected, you will receive the same service as a paying client:

Important: a pro bono letter is not a guarantee of any specific VA outcome. Every claim is decided by the VA based on the full evidentiary record. A supportive medical opinion is one component of a strong claim. We do not predict ratings, predict approval odds, or represent veterans before the VA in any capacity. Pro bono recipients receive the same honest viability assessment as paying clients, including the possibility of a non-supportable opinion if the medical evidence does not support a connection.

Application process and timeline

Launch window: Applications are open now. The first awards, our Founding Recipients, will be selected on or before May 1, 2026 from applications received between today and April 30, 2026.

Monthly selection: Beginning May 1, 2026, awards are made on the first business day of each month for applications on file.

Notification: Selected applicants are contacted by email with award details and next steps. Non-selected applicants receive a courtesy email; your application remains in the queue for the following month unless you opt out.

Attestation and honesty

The program relies on your honesty. The application includes a single attestation confirming that paying for a nexus letter would be a significant financial hardship. We do not ask for income documentation, tax returns, or proof of assets. We take you at your word.

If a recipient is later found to have misrepresented their financial situation, the program reserves the right to invoice for the standard service fees and to permanently bar the recipient from reapplying. This matters because the program exists for veterans in genuine need. Every spot taken by someone who could afford the service is a spot taken from someone who cannot.

Sharing your experience

Pro bono recipients are not required to provide any testimonial, review, or public statement. There is no obligation after delivery of the letter.

If you choose to share your experience publicly on any platform (Google reviews, Trustpilot, Reddit, social media, forums, or elsewhere), federal regulations (16 CFR Part 255, governing endorsements and testimonials) require you to disclose that you received the letter at no charge through our Pro Bono Program. A simple sentence such as "I received this nexus letter through their Pro Bono Program at no cost" satisfies the disclosure requirement. We ask that you honor this rule if you choose to share publicly. This protects both you and us from federal endorsement-disclosure enforcement.

Legal notice. This service provides independent medical opinions for use in VA disability claims. The Pro Bono Program is offered at the sole discretion of the reviewing physician. Application, selection, and delivery of a letter does not establish a physician-patient relationship. Letters are based on record review only. No examinations, telehealth consultations, or video visits are conducted. Selection in the program does not guarantee an approved letter, a specific VA rating, or any particular VA outcome. The viability assessment applied to pro bono cases is identical to the assessment applied to paid cases. If the medical evidence does not support an honest nexus opinion, no letter will be written, regardless of payment status.

Non-discrimination. The program does not consider race, color, religion, national origin, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability status, or any other protected characteristic in selection. Random lottery among eligible applicants is the sole selection mechanism.

Program modifications. The program terms, eligibility criteria, and selection process may be updated from time to time. The current version published on this page supersedes any prior version.
